I hit Minneapolis for the Summer XGames on behalf of the Boston Globe – Needless to say it kicked serious ass! If you know me, it comes as no surprise that I was stoked on the skateboard street and halfpipe competitions, checking out some of my favorite skaters shred.
Featured in the gallery are none other than Ryan Sheckler, Leticia Bufoni, Zion Wright, Nyjah Houston, Aori Nishimura and Mike “Hucker” Clark.
BREAKING THE STEREOTYPE
With great power comes great responsibility and Ryan Sheckler & Nyjah Houston Embrace that motto to it’s fullest. As two of the worlds top action sports althetes, both extend their impact beyond the kink rails throughs their respective charity initiatives – The Sheckler Foundation and Let It Flow.
On the other hand, skaters like Leticia Bufoni are putting Women’s skateboarding back on the map. The 2016 XGames marked the return of women’s skate after a 3 year hiatus from 2013-2106. The road to the top for a female skater is far less glamorous than it’s made out to be. Equipment, travel and training expenses pile up, causing those without loyal sponsors to pave their own way financially. The tables have started to turn for these bad-ass-babes as social media has provided them a new medium to rejuvenate their fanbase, captivating men and women of all ages with their radical style, undercover toughness and one-of-a-kind personalities!
